World Deforestation Clock

Source of statistics: FAO Forest Resources Assessment 2005
  • Each year about 13 million hectares of the world's forests are lost due to deforestation, but the rate of net forest loss is slowing down, thanks to new planting and natural expansion of existing forests.
  • From 1990 to 2000, the net forest loss was 8.9 million hectares per year.
  • From 2000 to 2005, the net forest loss was 7.3 million hectares per year - an area the size of Sierra Leone or Panama and equivalent to 200 km2 per day.
  • Primary forests are lost or modified at a rate of 6 million hectares per year through deforestation or selective logging.
  • Plantation forests are established at a rate of 2.8 million hectares per year.

13,000,000 hectares/year = .412 hectares/sec

Tsunami

Yesterday I saw a movie; the name of the movie is “Tsunami”. I would like to share my opinions and feelings about this particular topic. First we know that Tsunami is strange natural disaster, but what is poking me again and again, the things that happened after tsunami comes and destroyed. Like raping, stealing, kidnapping and many more, all these cannot be natural disaster but some government, communities and citizens who are not affected by this disaster say that, all these are natural disaster; it’s not that easy to bring back to normal position. Why is that so? Can someone explain me if you got some reasonable answer. I have included all my opinion and feelings in a page called Tsunami. Hope you all would really read my blog and give some solutions and prediction about this particular killer.

The Cove

The crucial activities which is happening in Japan, Taiji; killing dolphins for meats and using them for shows.
This news made me upset just because of the awareness of the people of Japan, where some really involve in this activity and on the other hand, many citizens don't know about this activity which is happening in Taiji. Its up to the government of Japan what they have to do, I have no rights to Prejudice them after watching the "The Cove" movie. My thoughts and opinions are mentioned in separate page in this blog, titled with "My First Geography Class". I request all viewers to visit this page and leave your comments.
